The 'Eyes' Flower Stand: A Visionary Design by Naai-Jung Shih

Winner of the Silver A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2018

Naai-Jung Shih's 'Eyes' flower stand, a unique design inspired by the human vision, combines art, nature, and technology in a dazzling display of creativity and innovation. This award-winning design stands as a testament to Shih's exceptional skill and imagination.

The 'Eyes' flower stand is not just a functional piece; it's a work of art. Inspired by the human eyes and their quest for beauty in nature, the design is a visual representation of this vision. The golden oval sphere, symbolizing the eye, is eager to accommodate a variety of plants, reflecting the human desire to seek and appreciate the wonders of Mother Nature.

What sets the 'Eyes' flower stand apart is its unique design properties. The golden sphere is designed with different hole sizes to accommodate various plant stems. The three sets of legs are perfect for any surface configuration, with adjustable lengths for added versatility. This thoughtful design ensures that the stand is not only visually appealing but also highly functional.

The creation of the 'Eyes' flower stand is a testament to the power of technology in design. The golden oval sphere was created using parametric 3D design software, with two layers of concentric surfaces under an order of random openings. The sphere was then 3D-printed in Nylon, showcasing the possibilities of rapid prototyping in design realization.

The 'Eyes' flower stand measures 23.5cm(W) x 30cm(H) x 12cm(D), with the outermost surface covered in gold foil. This design, tagged as a flower stand, eyes, Mother Nature, parametric design, and rapid-prototyping, is a product of Shih's solo effort, demonstrating his remarkable talent and creativity.

Despite its complex design, the 'Eyes' flower stand is intended for static display. The project, which started from scratch in 2016 in Taipei, took about two months of intensive work to complete, with the golden ball made around April 2017. The design process involved research into the composition of openings or penetrated holes to accommodate flower stems in a dazzling order. Overcoming creative and technical challenges, including the application of gold foil, Shih was able to create a design that is both functional and eye-catching.

In conclusion, the 'Eyes' flower stand by Naai-Jung Shih is a remarkable piece of design that combines art, nature, and technology. It's a testament to Shih's creativity and skill, and a worthy winner of the Silver A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2018. The 'Eyes' flower stand is more than just a functional piece; it's a celebration of the beauty of nature, a symbol of vision, and a testament to the power of design.
